Civil Litigation
Robert A. Murphy is a senior litigator with Casner &
Edwards, LLP. His experience has provided
him with extraordinary depth as a trial
attorney and as a strong administrator
of large, complex cases. Mr. Murphy has
a reputation for attention to detail,
thorough preparation, and firmness of
purpose that marks him as an excellent
litigator. He has been the principal outside
counsel responsible for the nationwide
defense of thousands of asbestos personal
injury cases for a major corporation.
Mr. Murphy has tried a wide variety of
civil cases involving issues such as professional
malpractice, disputes between franchisors
and franchisees, breach of contract, discrimination,
libel, fraud, personal injury, product
liability, toxic torts and environmental
matters, as well as wrongful termination
cases on behalf of both plaintiffs and
defendants. His victories include a million
dollar verdict for a plaintiff in a wrongful
termination case. He has been recognized as a Super Lawyer® in Boston Magazine.
Mr. Murphy’s first ten years as a
lawyer were at the US Department of Justice
in Washington, where he became Chief of
the Criminal Section of the Civil Rights
Division. In addition to supervising the
work of attorneys who prosecuted public
officials in federal courts throughout
the United States, Mr. Murphy personally
prosecuted several major cases, including
the shootings at Kent State, Ku Klux Klan
bombings, and police brutality cases.
On the civil side, he tried cases involving
voting rights, employment discrimination,
school desegregation and access to public
facilities and accommodations.
After leaving the Justice Department, Mr.
Murphy served for over three years as
the National Director of the Lawyers Committee
for Civil Rights Under Law. The Committee
was established at the request of President
John F. Kennedy to involve leading members
of the bar throughout the United States
in an effort to ensure civil rights to
all Americans.
Mr. Murphy is a member of the American
and the Boston Bar Associations. He is
admitted to practice in the District of
Columbia, as well as the federal and state
bars of Massachusetts. He has argued appeals
and tried cases in many federal courts
throughout the United States.
Mr. Murphy has always been active in community
affairs. Currently, he is the Secretary
and a member of the Executive Committee
of the National Lawyers Committee for
Civil Rights Under Law. He is currently the President of the Board of Governors
of the Wellesley Country Club. Previously,
he served on the Steering Committee of
the Boston Lawyers Committee for Civil
Rights Under Law, as a trustee of the
Boston Zoological Society and a member
of the Justice and Peace Commission of
the Archdiocese of Boston. He is a former
president of the Villanova University
National Alumni Association and was awarded
the Alumni Medal in recognition of his
contributions to the University. He served
on active duty in the U.S. Navy for over
three years and in the active Naval Reserve
for another five years. He is a graduate
of Villanova University and the University
of Notre Dame Law School.
